Mr. Magoo Rules Football

Mr. Magoo was so comical that I think it's a shame the cartoon is not on TV. The situations he got himself in just had you shaking your head while grinning from ear to ear.There was some backlash from those who felt the cartoon made fun of blind people. 

Seriously? It's a comic and it's purpose is to make you laugh. It succeeds.

Deputy Dawg

Halloween month is over. Hope you enjoyed all the scary comics. I thought I'd start the new month off with this Deputy Dawg cartoon. Use to be one of my favorites but no one seems to show it on TV anymore.

Let's see. Frankenstein comic one day and Dracula comic the next. It seems that pretty much covers two of the most well known monsters ever.

Of course there would be comic books featuring the most well known of all monsters . . . Frankenstein. Halloween month seems like the perfect time to feature him. I see little kids dressed as Frankenstein every year trick or treating.

It's Halloween month so I thought this month I'd feature some comics that relate to Halloween. Does Timmy the Timid Ghost remind you of anyone? You know. Any other cartoon ghost?

Live Action Animation

I thought this story might interest you. Nickelodeon is bringing back some of it's popular cartoon shows from the 90's and making them live action. Sounds like it would be on the order of Space Jam.

It will be interesting to see how this works out but I still wish they would bring back the old Huckleberry Hound group. :-)

Continuing to delve into TV shows from the past that found their way to comic books, here is the cover from one of The Little Rascals comic books. Alfalfa kind of stands out, doesn't he?

Muggsy Mouse Comic Book

This looks like a pretty cool comic book. There were numerous comics using mice as the main cartoon character. Believe it or not, Mighty Mouse wasn't the first on the scene. Super Mouse preceded him. As far as Muggsy Mouse goes, this is the first time I heard of him.

Glancing through the comic I think I need to add this to the likes of Ruff and Reddy. These are comics that are forgotten but I believe would be just as popular now than ever. Maybe even more so.

By the way, I still remember when  these comic books were a dime. Even then a dime was not that hard for us kids to come up with.

Heckle and Jeckle

Does anyone remember the most famous magpies of all?

It's Heckle and Jeckle and they were always getting into mischief. It was a weekly cartoon series way back when.

Toyland Comics

This cartoon makes me a little nervous about when my grandson starts driving in a few years.

Gulliver's Travels

The story of Gulliver's Travels is a classic and very entertaining for kids. The opening page from the comic book of the same name gives you an idea what you can look forward to.

In my writings I've taken some classics and rewrote them in a more modern way and might consider doing the same with this but I'm not so sure kids know this story.

Leave It To Beaver Comic Book

Leave it to Beaver is a classic TV show. Until today, though, I had no idea the was a comic book of Leave it to Beaver. I have no idea how many individual Leave it to Beaver Comic Books there were but so far I've come across four.

The Toodles

The Toodles was a newspaper comic strip by Hae Baers. I just came across this and this first strip cracked me up. The mother couldn't help but crack a smile at the kid's logic.

Little Nemo in Slumberland

Little Nemo is a fictional character created by American cartoonist Winsor McCay in the early 1900's. Nemo goes to sleep and has these dreams that are overly exaggerated but ends up waking in the final panel.

Fight Lasted Longer than the Ronda Rousey Fight

As luck would have it I came across this comic book page soon after Ronda Rousey destroyed Bethe Correia in 34 seconds.

This fight gave the audience more for their money. In 1892 Harry Sharpe knocked out Frank Crosby in round 77. There are a couple other feats noted in this comic but this one fits in with the immediate present.

Does This Work?

I wonder if this works? She certainly comes up with some imaginary ideas.

Mazie Comic

Last time I gave you a look at Tippy. I found plenty of comic books with her featured but so far only a few with our newest teenager, Mazie.

Glancing through her comic I think she is well worth bringing on board. What do you thinnk?

Tippy Teen and the Teeners

Tippy Teen was first published in 1965. Tippy was a teenager maybe on the order of a girl Archie. She has her circle of friends and a crush on a kid named Tommy. Here is one of the single "Quick Trick" stories that could be found on the inside pages.

She's a cute teenager and between her and Little Angel, there are plenty of stories for kids of all ages.

Get ready for Little Angel. As you'll learn, she is anything but an angel but is so cute and mischievous that you can't help but adore her.

This is an old comic that begs to be brought into the mainstream. I'll be adding my unique touches and Angel will evolve as time goes on, but she is begging to leap into today's comics. Stay tuned.

Archie - Original Comic - Page 1

Is this great or what? This is when Archie was originally introduced in Pep Comics in 1941. This is another of many examples that show how cartoon characters can change over time. The artist keeps adding new touches and the character evolves.

Charles Schultz is a great example if you look at the original Peanuts characters.

It looks like this is the first time Betty sees Archie and she is immediately attracted to him. I know, right? He looks a bit dorky. :-)

I'll add the rest of the pages to this first story once I get them enhanced. Keep in mind this is enhanced so some of the colors have been changed and/or made more vivid. Unfortunately fixing the text isn't something I have at my disposal at the moment, but it is readable.

Original Olive Oyl Comic Strip

This comic strip is from Thimble Theater. Olive Oyl looks a tad different, doesn't she? This isn't Popeye saving her.

Mutt and Jeff

Remember the Mutt and Jeff comics? I couldn't get this enhanced like I wanted to but I thought you'd enjoy seeing them. Not so sure younger people will know who they are.

Ruff and Reddy

Ruff and Reddy was one of my favorite cartoon shows when I was a kid. It ran from 1957 - 1960. Ruff was a smart and loyal cat and Reddy was a friendly and brave dog who was not very bright. Here's the cartoon.

I want to bring them back starting with this comic. The boys pick the wrong time to stop reading signs.

Common Core Math Sucks

I drew this comic for my "I Hate Homework" book after I spent over an hour trying to help my grandson with a homework problem, only to find out there was no answer! Seriously. The teacher said it was designed to make the kids think. I figure the next time he has trouble solving a problem he'll quickly assume there is no answer and move on.

Then on another problem I tried to show him a simple way to get the answer and he proceeded to show me the complicated steps they were told to follow.

Walt Kelly

Walt Kelly is probably best known for his comic strip Pogo. I enhanced this comic because it made me crack up.

Popeye's First Appearance in Thimble Theater

E.C. Segar created the comic Thimble Theater back in 1919. I'll show you some of the earlier strips from time to time where Olive Oyl appeared and looked a heck of a lot different than she did later. But right now I wanted to show you Popeye's first appearance in the strip in January of 1929.

Yep. It took almost ten years for Popeye to show up. I'm sure glad he did.

The Wizard of Oz - Dorothy's Diary

This is the opening scene in my - Wizard of Oz: Dorothy's Diary - book. I took an old classic comic book on the Wizard of Oz and fixed some of the comic panels along with adding my own dialogue to make it a similar but different version of Oz.

This was a fun project and has been well accepted so I'll be doing more of these types of books in the future. The comic books I use are in the public domain but I want to add my own touch. There will be plenty of comic panels in these books but will be on the order of the Wimpy Kid books in that there will also be a written narrative or story, if you will.
